The year is 1935. The Great Depression is in full swing and Lottie has not only lost her job , but her landlord evicted her and then her grandmother passed away from pneumonia.
Luckily, she inherited the rundown Inn that her grandparents bought when they came to the US. The only problem? It needs major renovations.
Sinks leak, the stairs creak, shutters bang against the walls, and she's pretty sure she's seen a few ghosts hanging around. To top it all off, the ruins of an old church that burned down are right next door, complete with creepy and broken gravestones.
The whole place has a scary atmosphere that would run off any potential customers. At first, it feels like the inn is more of a curse than a blessing but now? Lottie has a plan.
Lottie looks around at the Inn crumbling around her and realizes that maybe she should lean into the spooky vibes. She opens up as a haunted experience, giving the ghosts names and stories and along the way, adds a ton of spooky novels to the library and has weekly book club meetings.
Everyone loves it! It's an amazing escape from the gloom of the great depression and eventually, Lottie is glad that life pushed her in this direction.

Obviously, this is just the backstory for the kit and we can't actually dive in and visit, but we CAN decorate our planners in October and join in the fun!

I love a good haunted hotel theme and does anyone else remember the Tower of Terror disney movie from the 90s? It was my FAVORITE.

This theme has been giving me some trouble when it comes to the design but I think I finally got it right and now it's going to be in the shop TOMORROW at 12pmCST (Sept 12th).

We're going to be doing the same thing we did in June and celebrate the readathon all month long. The facebook group has been a bit quiet lately, but we're going to try to bring it back to life -- I mean, the ghost theme kind of fits, right?

Let me show you the details so you won't miss anything! I did make some changes since I filmed the videos for my instagram on the readathon sheets so definitely take a peek at those!

Now, I know you guys love Halloween as much as I do, so you probably have a lot of kits in line to use for the month so we still have a weekly kit, rather than a monthly kit for this theme.

I did make an add on so you can stretch the kit two weeks if you want -- like if you wanted to start the month and end the month with the same theme. If you grab these, it will give you a total of 13 full boxes so you can use it across 2 weeks, as well as an extra set of date covers and some other essentials like washi and functional stickers! It's up to you, of course!

You'll be able to choose between the above version or a hobonichi cousin version (and add a couple of different add on's if you want!)

For the June readathon, we kind of had a tide pool theme and for this one, we're making a little hotel! I thought it would be cute to do this so that we could have windows filled with ghosts.

Of course, even though we're doing this for a month, we had to have a reading challenge sheet too!

When I asked in the facebook group, you guys still wanted to do 5 prompts -- 1 for each week + a group read so that's what we're doing!

Obviously, you can still read 1 book for 2 prompts if you want, but we'll have a book review thread every week so you can drop your review of the book you read! I actually did miss this part for our June readathon and we just read all willy nilly, but I'll try to be more structured for October!

Here are the prompts:

  • Check In - Read the first book in a series OR "check in" to a series you started awhile back but haven't read in a long time.
  • Graveyard Stroll - Dark/Atmospheric Setting - this can be a haunted/horror book or just something that has a fun, but slightly dark vibe.
  • Tales Beyond the Veil - A book that blurs the line between reality and the supernatural/paranormal like magical realism, historical fantasy,  or urban fantasy.
  • Forgotten Wing - a book that you don't see talked about often on social media or with your friends
  • Group Read/Free Space - a read that we will pick in the Creating & Co book club on facebook or you can choose to use it as a free space!

If you have another way to interpreting the prompts, you can change it up! I won't police your book picks so feel free to make them work for you! You can also ask for recommendations or suggestions in the facebook group and we'll have posts that allow for book recs too.

This sheet is meant to represent all the things you might find a tide pool, so I put mine on a journal page and kind of drew a tide pool to go along with that idea, but the great thing about this type of challenge format is that you can use it in a bunch of different ways!

It will still come with a badge sticker so you can use the badge tracking sheet to keep track of your reading challenges too!

I've also been LOVING journal stickers lately - I've been using them in my journal for book reviews and on my bujo layouts for my weeks! They are actually kind of hard to make, I think because I have to think outside the realm of weekly kits but they are so much fun!

There's 3 different sheets and you can pick and choose which ones you want. Here's a layout that I did as an example.

I haven't fully planned them out yet, but throughout the month I am hoping to do random threads of photo challenges or whatnot to have shop credit giveaways in the facebook group! If you have any ideas, please send them my way on one of the social media apps!

I will also be opening up a group chat within the group so we can chat all month about what we're reading and the group read!

Needless to say, being part of the Facebook group will hopefully make the event all the more fun! Though obviously, you can still do this one on your own as well!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

  • Do you have to buy stickers to participate in the readathon? No, our events are all free to participate in but having the stickers make them a lot more fun!
  • Do you have to read a certain genre? Not at all! I like to try to pick books that fit the theme but sometimes I'm just not in the mood for that genre or vibe so I'll pick another type of book that I am in the mood for and let the kit theme be just for fun.

I also have a ton of other journal themes and sheets that are coming to the shop, along with two rolls of washi tape so I'm just going to drop a bunch of pics so you can see it all!

I think that's everything for this week! I hope you're as excited as I am for this theme AND don't forget to pick up the Fall Reading Challenges if you missed them awhile back!
