I have been trying to get a mermaid kit designed that I loved for YEARS!! Don't get me wrong, I liked the other ones I've released, but none of them were favorites.

This one though.

This one is a favorite.

It's everything I've ever wanted in a mermaid kit -- it's dark, yet colorful and the mermaids are gorgeous and there's a ton of books and sea life hanging out all over the place.

It almost makes me wish I liked mermaid stories more, but they've never been my favorite. I think I do have 1 on my kindle I need to read and I'll be saving it for this readathon for sure!

So if you are the same way - don't worry, you'll be able to do this readathon even without reading a bunch of sea books!

Anyway, this kit is coming to the shop TOMORROW at 12pmCST (May 2nd) and the readathon is going to be a bit different this time around!

So let me show you the kit and then I'll go over all the details so you won't miss anything!

First up, the biggest change is that we'll be doing the readathon for the entire month of June. I feel like most of us have been very busy lately or just haven't felt up to reading as much as we used to, so I wanted to give us more time to read.

Readathons used to be fun exactly because of the big push to read a ton for a week, but now, 8 years into hosting them, it's more fun to have a theme to follow and meander our way through the books so that's what we're doing!

With that in mind, I did still just do a weekly kit for you to use in any week of the event because I figured you would have other themes you'd want to use during that month. You can see the vertical version above!

You'll be able to choose between the above version or a hobonichi cousin version (and add a couple of different add on's if you want!)

Speaking of add ons, I also made our extra - weekly sticker sheets too! If you grab these, it will give you a total of 13 full boxes so you can use it across 2 weeks, as well as an extra set of date covers and some other essentials like washi and functional stickers!

Of course, even though we're doing this for a month, we had to have a reading challenge sheet too!

When I asked in the facebook group, you guys still wanted to do 5 prompts -- 1 for each week + a group read so that's what we're doing!

Obviously, you can still read 1 book for 2 prompts if you want, but we'll have a book review thread every week so you can drop your review of the book you read!

Here are the prompts:

  • Week 1: Character Faces Fear: Character is scared of doing something, but does it anyway
  • Week 2: Released in 2025: a book released in the year 2025
  • Week 3: Unwilling Protagonist: A protagonist that doesn't really want to be there but ends up joining whatever the plot is anyway
  • Week 4: Tides of Fate: Characters are "destined" or "fated" to be doing something or a prophecy is involved in the plot.
  • Group Read/Free Space - This will be voted on in the Creating & Co Book club group on Facebook and we'll chat about it during June!

If you have another way to interpreting the prompts, you can change it up! I won't police your book picks so feel free to make them work for you! You can also ask for recommendations or suggestions in the facebook group and we'll have posts that allow for book recs too.

This sheet is meant to represent all the things you might find a tide pool, so I put mine on a journal page and kind of drew a tide pool to go along with that idea, but the great thing about this type of challenge format is that you can use it in a bunch of different ways!

It will still come with a badge sticker so you can use the badge tracking sheet to keep track of your reading challenges too!

I've also been LOVING journal stickers lately - I've been using them in my journal for book reviews and on my bujo layouts for my weeks! They are actually kind of hard to make, I think because I have to think outside the realm of weekly kits but they are so much fun!

There's 4 different sheets and you can pick and choose which ones you want. Here's a quick layout I did just to show how I might use them for a book review of a book I use for this event:

I haven't fully planned them out yet, but throughout the month I am hoping to do random threads of photo challenges or whatnot to have shop credit giveaways in the facebook group! If you have any ideas, please send them my way on one of the social media apps!

I will also be opening up a group chat within the group so we can chat all month about what we're reading and the group read!

Needless to say, being part of the Facebook group will hopefully make the event all the more fun! Though obviously, you can still do this one on your own as well!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

  • Do you have to buy stickers to participate in the readathon? No, our events are all free to participate in but having the stickers make them a lot more fun!
  • Do you have to read a certain genre? Not at all! I like to try to pick books that fit the theme but sometimes I'm just not in the mood for that genre or vibe so I'll pick another type of book that I am in the mood for and let the kit theme be just for fun.

I think that's everything for this week! I hope you're as excited as I am for this theme AND don't forget to pick up the Summer Reading Challenges if you missed them a couple of weeks ago!
